Aotearoa Quilters members last year participated in an international challenge with French and Japanese quilters. Each quilter was given a topic – a natural wonder. The same topics were used in each of the three countries resulting in three different perspectives on each topic. The quilts have been exhibited in Japan and are now here in New Zealand. They will travel to France in August for their exhibition in September.
All the quilts from New Zealand, Japan and France, 30 from each country, will be on display at Cottage Flair, 1127 Fenton Street,
Rotorua, the last weekend of this month, February. The shop is open on Saturday 24th February from 9 to 3 and on Sunday 25th February from 10 to 3.
The NZ quilts can be viewed here in the gallery on our website but we haven’t seen the French and Japanese ones yet. This is a unique opportunity to compare styles of the 3 countries as the 30 subjects are interpreted in different ways.
The quilts are available for exhibition in New Zealand from now until August, when they head away to France. We will keep you informed about the touring schedule. If you have an idea where they could be displayed, please contact Mary, President@aotearoaquilters.co.nz.

I viewed the exhibition today at Cottage Flair and what a wonderful exhibition it is. If you get the chance to see it, do go and spend time looking at the amazing quilts. Absolutely fascinating to see how the 3 very different countries interpret each picture. Sometimes you could pick out the Japanese ones from their use of fabric, but often you couldn’t. The French were very keen on embellishments. The Kiwi ones often stood out for their modern simplicity, and clean lines.
Shirley Sparks had done a brilliant job organising and hanging the quilts and many thanks to Jill at Cottage Flair for the use of the classroom, which housed the quilts on Peek stands so well. Inspiring, inspired to keep going on the challenges.
