Some interesting quilted works were on show at the Toss the Floss exhibition, as well as many other embroidered and embellished items, some 3D, some cushions, many textile ‘pictures’ and bags. Bright and saturated colours in quilts, contrasted with delicate landscapes and textured linens, made this a visually stimulating environment. On the upper floor was a small but significant exhibition of quilted and stitched works by renowned New Zealand artist Malcolm Harrison, who died in 2007, and whose works are displayed in museums throughout New Zealand. (See here for more about him.)

Works that stood out for me as a quilter were Anniversary Quilt and Creative Dummy by Joan Hamilton, Save Our Birds by Diane Toulmin (which reminded me a little of work by Katharine Morrison, utilising blankets), and 3 framed embroideries by Raewin Irwin on a patchwork of fabric collage.

I was pleased I was in Auckland last weekend and able to visit this vibrant exhibition of work by a group who come together to stitch, or share techniques on a regular but casual basis. The members include Joan Hamilton, a well-known tutor in the area, Marie Wintle, Lesley Calder, Margaret Ried, Victoria Chin, Fiona Mendel, Deborah Peek, Kay White, Lorraine Allen, Raewyn Irwin, Pam Todd, Paula Apperley-Wyborn and Diane Toulmin.
