September 2023 Vice-President’s Piece

Spring is really in the air! It’s warming up so fast, calving is pretty much over here in the north, and suddenly the lawns need mowing every time I turn around.

It’s invigorating and it feels like the quilting community is invigorated too. There are so many quilt exhibitions coming up, it’s time for inspiration! Scroll down to see the advertising posters and write the dates in your diaries. And the 30 Day Spring Challenge that AQ has been running seems to have had plenty of energy too, with lots of interesting projects going on.

Aotearoa Quilters had our AGM in conjunction with the Kapiti Coast Quilters exhibition last weekend and by all accounts – I couldn’t make it (sad face) – it was a lively weekend. We hear reports of more than 900 visitors on the Saturday and many positive comments on our ‘Light it Up’ members challenge, and our RED colour challenge, with some of our challenge quilts sold, congratulations to the makers!

Also at our AGM was an uncommon phenomenon of four of our life members all in one place at one time and standing still for a photograph!

From left to right we have Felicity Ellison, Catherine McDonald, Bobby Duncan and Marge Hurst.

This warm weather is making me think of temperature quilts. Have you come across this idea yet? It seems to be a new trend in the last few years to make a quilt from daily blocks that illustrate the high and low temperature of the place you live. Not quite sure how that works? Google ‘temperature quilts images’ and you’ll soon get the idea, and see the huge variety of quilts people are making with this theme. I’ve included a few examples below just to spark your interest.

Have you made a temperature quilt? We’d love to hear about it and showcase your work in the newsletter, send an email to lottiemscott@yahoo.com

Speaking of temperature, I’m off on holiday to Australia to experience their temperatures. First stop is Queensland, and I think I better pack my jandals! Happy stitching!
