New Zealand through Our Eyes – Conditions of Entry

An exciting new Challenge for Aotearoa Quilters Members…

 Overview

“New Zealand through Our Eyes” is a challenge that gives an opportunity to celebrate the culture, flora, fauna, history, geography or any other aspect that represents NZ.

All accepted entries will be exhibited at the Great New Zealand Quilt Show, Rotorua, 8th -10th March 2019.

A selection of entries will travel to Ailsa Craig Quilt & Fiber Art Festival to be exhibited as part of the New Zealand exhibition.

A selection of entries will also tour NZ with a selection of Canadian challenge quilts following the Ailsa Craig Festival May 2019.


Conditions of Entry 

Entries have now closed.

 All submissions must meet the conditions of entry to be eligible for selection.

Entry Details

  • To enter you must be current members of Aotearoa Quilters (Join here if you are not a member yet).
  • Aotearoa Quilters reserves the right not to accept any quilts that do not meet the conditions of entry or that the Committee deems as not being a suitable entry.
  • Insurance of entries is your responsibility. Whilst all care will be taken, Aotearoa Quilters will not accept liability for any loss or damage of quilts.
  • A number of challenge quilts will be selected to travel to Alisa Craig Festival May 2019, Canada.
  • Quilts traveling to Ailsa Craig will be insured by the Ailsa Craig Festival while traveling. You will need to complete an online form and indicate the value of your quilt if your quilt is selected to travel.

Quilt Details

Size – there is a choice of the following sizes:

18”x 18” [square]   –  8”x 8” [square]  – 18”x 8” [Horizontal]  –  8”x 18” [Vertical]

  • Entries must have a design feature that ties it to NZ and included in the Artist Statement.
  • Quilts must be sturdy enough in the way they are made to withstand packing and travelling to a variety of venues ( ie not easily damaged)
  • Entries must not be mounted or framed.

Hanging and Identification Details

  • A hanging sleeve 2 ½ inches wide, finishing ½ inch from either side and no more than ½ inch from the top edge of the quilt, is to be securely stitched to the top of the quilt.
  • The hook side of Velcro is to be stitched to the top edge of the hanging sleeve [also ½ inch from the sides and top of the quilt].
  • Soft sided Velcro of the same size, is to be named and attached to the hook side of the Velcro [ For protection of all quilts when packed to travel].  No ‘stick-on’ Velcro is to be used.
  • A fabric label with the quilt title, makers name, and contact details is to be securely attached to the quilt, on the back bottom left hand corner, when viewed from the back [contact may be address, phone or email].

Exhibiting Details

  • Accepted entries will be exhibited at the Great New Zealand Quilt show in Rotorua, March 2019.
  • A number of challenge quilts will be selected to travel to Alisa Craig Festival May 2019, Canada.
  • Selected entries will tour New Zealand with a selection of quilts from the Canadian challenge quilts following the Ailsa Craig festival, May 2019, at a range of venues arranged by Aotearoa Quilters.
  • Quilts will be returned to quilt makers by March 2020 unless otherwise arranged with the maker. Non-selected entries will be returned after the exhibition in March 2019.
  • Quilts are not to be exhibited at any other venues prior to entering this challenge.
  • Entries may be for sale while exhibited in NZ at the price set by the Quiltmaker. Aotearoa Quilters will add a 15% commission to the sale price.

Photography Details

  • Partial photographs of up to 20% of the quilt may be shared on social media or any other public forum prior to the opening exhibition. The intention is to create an interest without revealing the main features of the quilt.
  • Aotearoa Quilters and Ailsa Craig Quilt & Fibre Festival may use photographic images for promotional purposes. [Quilt makers will be acknowledged.]

Submission Details

  1. Complete an online ENTRY FORM and entry fee payment for each entry. A copy of your completed entry form will be automatically emailed to you – Please print a copy and send with your quilt.
  2. The entry fee is $15 and additional entries $10. Payment to be made by internet banking to ASB 12-3048-0289863-00 Ref: NZ Challenge and Your Name.
  3. For the protection of your quilt, it should be submitted in a suitably sized cloth bag that is labeled with the quilt title and maker’s name.
  4. You must include a self-addressed prepaid courier bag ( or with payment attached) [no cartons]  large enough for the return of your quilts. Cardboard and other forms of packing [except a cloth bag] are not retained for the return of quilts because of storage constraints.
  5. Entries must be received no later than 5th February 2019. Late entries will not be accepted.
