Hello for the Final Time from Thames

After almost four years on the committee, I have had to make the difficult decision to resign due to an ongoing health condition. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the committee, making new friends and meeting many of you at Great New Zealand Quilt Shows and Symposiums, as well as at our regional meetings. These gatherings are wonderful for inspiration, sharing information, and learning.

My passion is making quilts for family and friends, as well as for anyone I hear of who is in need of something to cheer them up or to show that someone cares.

My next project is for a young man in San Francisco who is 22 and autistic. He is the son of a work colleague of my daughter and loves to paint. When she last went to a meeting, he gave her a painting to bring home. When I asked if she would like to take him a Kiwiana quilt when she next visits, her response was, “Yes please, and his favourite colours are pink, purple and turquoise!” Not quite the colour scheme I had imagined, but it is always good to stretch your imagination and work a bit outside your comfort zone.

I am also preparing for the August sew-along, making a scrap quilt with the scraps from the scrap quilt I made in the Silly Season Sew-Along. I am not sure what happens with scraps — they tend to multiply quicker than I can sew them!

One of my final tasks on the committee is to find the recipients for our community quilts at next year’s show. I am currently talking to two agencies who seem very excited about the prospect of receiving our quilts for their clients. I will include information from them in the next newsletter so that you have plenty of time if you would like to make a quilt for them.
