Flour, sugar, rice, biscuits etc were weighed into paper bags. The bicycle represents the owners reluctance to hire school girls to do after school deliveries.

Improv Trio – Helen BeavenImprov Trio takes inspiration from tapa cloth designs and lino prints used throughout the Pacific region. The improv piecing features the petal shape often used in tapa designs. The piecing and layers of stitching give the look of irregular lines created with lino printing.

Improv Tulip – Helen BeavenI’ve been exploring improvisational piecing. In previous work I’ve used shapes such as petals to resemble tapa cloth. With ‘Improv Tulip’ the curve piecing interprets the tulip flower. The irregular quilt shape adds interest, with the 12 weight thread providing additional details.

Kina Cliffs – Heather CraigWe have been camping across the road from this scene for over 20 years on our Christmas holidays. We swim in the sea and at low tide we walk along the beach. In the distance are the pine trees at Rabbit Island, the Richmond Ranges and Nelson area. Our get-away piece of paradise.

Kowhai Road – Cherie GurneyWhile on holiday I picked up some Kowhai pods when out walking and proceeded to draw them once home. I chose to paper piece this quilt as I had never tried this technique before. The flowers from the Kowhai tree are yellow (kowhai in Māori) and the starting point of my colour palette.

Their willingness to dress up for me and participate in my civil rights project was humbling. I sincerely hope they have seen better times since that day.

NZ Bush Walk – Valda SuttonInspired by a mosaic floor in the Roman city of Volubilis in Morocco destroyed in 1744 which depicted the tree of life. I used the idea to make a typical walk through the New Zealand Bush. Under the canopy of the mighty Kauri trees, follow the path and watch out for the birds amongst the bush.
