01_Brenda Carruthers_Matariki MuseMatariki Muse was inspired by the stars and moonlight. I wanted to try to capture a serene embodiment to light it up, but also something deeper in contrast to the light.
02_Daena Schofield_When we all Light it upAfter re-reading an article on worldwide light pollution I was inspired to create a quilt loosely based on the light pollution for Christchurch and its surrounds as displayed at https://cires.colorado.edu/artificial-sky
03_Barbara McFarlane_HeatherMostly hand dyed. Returning home after sisters funeral (705 km in 3 days) singing Precious Lord take my hand lead me on, let me stand........ Lead me onto the light, take my hand precious Lord lead me home.

05_Eleanor Cole_IllumimateUsing Inspiration, the quilt evolved from the Shoo Fly block emitting its golden light, radiating out illuminating the houses upwards into the night sky, lighting everything around it.
The quilt is enhanced using gold thread in the block, quilting and couching along the rays, to highlight its paths into the night sky, lighting it up.
06_Nita Harding_IlluminationFirst-Time Entrant.
I chose to depict a lighthouse as both a literal representation of "Light it Up", and as a symbol of security and clarity in today's uncertain world. My challenge to myself was to make the quilt using only solid colour fabrics, with no applique, to represent a clear message, unlike much of what arrives via the media currently.
07_Sonya Prchal_Light of my LifeHaving family overseas can be hard. A feeling of separation can darken my mood. To light it up I love to peruse joyful family photos of our time together. Creating a work sharing this joy was cathartic.
08_Kat Martin_Could this be BanksyMerit.
Remember the faces at Sotheby's,
When the painting slowly sank,
It caught the worlds attention,
Was truely a masterful prank.
It could only be that Banksy,
To you, I raise my cup,
But let's not shred the art this time,
Instead, let's Light It Up.
09_Heather McOnie_Life ForceMerit.
"Life Force" is a stylistic interpretation of the sun. Burning bright in the sky... burnt orange flames and golden rays, light up and heat the Earth, without which life on Earth would not exist.
10_Lois Parish Evans_Homage to the Shoo FlyThe Winner.
When light patterns are cast upon the platform high up in the tree tops of the Night Lights Tree Walk in the Redwoods, Rotorua, they become the inspiration for a modern interpretation of the Shoo Fly quilt pattern. A hand painted pattern which lights up and glows under spotlights.
11_Juliet Fitness_By the Light of the Silvery MoonSitting in our lounge, my inspiration was the moon shining in through one of the high windows. The silvery Moon Shadow fabric from Katipatch was perfect for the large triangles. Machine paper-foundation pieced moon and machine quilted with a walking foot, this is the biggest piece I have managed to complete in the past year due to polymyalgia.
12_Catherine McDonald_A Star is BornThe addition of a traditional block in our members challenge led me to look at it as the start of the show rather than hide it. Therefore centre stage with bright lights shining on it!
13_Sandie Sixtus_Boulder Bank LighthouseThe lighthouse on the Boulder Bank is an iconic feature in Nelson. I drew inspiration from a photo taken by local photographer, Dwayne Lohmann, who I felt captured the lit up aspect of the lighthouse.
14_Catherine Parkinson_The beaconThe NZ Latter-Day-Saint temple lit up Hamilton skies for 60 years before it’s lights were turned off during renovations. They were turned back on though, when the church discovered, pilots used the temple lights to guide them “home”. Likewise, Christ is our beacon that guides us to our Heavenly home.
15_Sheryl Madigan_Letting in the LightSunshine filters through the canopy to bring shafts of light to the dark forest floor.
16_Charlotte Scott_Sunshine After RainTurning up my face to enjoy the feeling of sunshine after long days of gloom and rain. The luminous warmth washes over me, like a ray of hope, lighting up my soul as well as my face.
With thanks to my daughter, who is my model and muse.
17_Clare Smith_After Midnight TokyoI love Tokyo in winter when the air is crisp, there are few tourists and the streets are bright with lanterns and light displays. After midnight, when the last train has gone, the back-streets are empty but the lights are still on.
18_Maria Rohs_A Brief History of LightingI thought about how light has always been needed in some form and how it has evolved over millennia to the present day.
19_Cindy Dobbin_A Guiding LightNew Zealand has a precious document and we as a nation should be using it as a guide for our nation to look after its people, land, rivers and oceans. It will direct us to do what is right. Let's light it up and use it as a beacon of hope for the future of New Zealand.
20_Nancy Williams_The FishermanMy husband is a keen fisherman and enjoys going out on the harbour at night.
He needs light to see what he is doing.
