Judging at Quilt Shows

  • Find out what happens in a judging/jurying sessions
  • Learn what standards might apply
  • Is it different for art, traditional and modern categories?
  • How to set the standards you want for your group show
  • Learn how to critique quilts made by yourself or other

These are a sessions for anyone who has ever wondered how people become judges? What were they thinking of? Why do we sometimes get back comments that may or may not be useful? If I enter overseas will the system be the same as I am used to?

We will practice critiquing, jurying and judging various elements of quiltmaking including design, technique and visual impact.  You will participate in mock judging/jurying sessions.

I have spent more than 8 years tracking down opportunities to work and practice with jurors and judges in Australia, USA and Great Britain and to investigate their training and philosophy. After more than 2 years of study, I am an Accredited Judge with the Quilters Guild of the British Isles.

Now I am sharing with others what I have learnt, and passing on my experience to you

Requirements:       Notebook and pencil

1 or 2 small quilts for us to practice the judging process on.

Please do not bring your prize-winning  masterpiece, we will be moving these around a lot,  folding them and holding them up. So simple and small is best.

We are not the ‘quilt police’ but will be working to encourage and support while we learn, and everything we discuss will be confidential.
