We have all read recent reports of youngsters coping (or in some cases not coping) with cold damp homes here in New Zealand. An initiative worked on the by the committee will see your donations of quilts distributed through needy schools around the country.
The first area targeted by Aotearoa Quilters will be Porirua will the assistance of SWIS (Social Workers in Schools.) SWIS workers have identified families where children and young people do not have any bedding and will be able to distribute to those most in need. Donations of cot and single size quilts will be gratefully received.
UPDATE – July 2016
We had a huge number of quilts donated and quilted at the Great New Zealand Quilt Show for Cosy Kiwi Kids.
Our focus has moved to the Rotorua area for this winter. We have had some feedback from the Social Workers in Schools (SWIS) in Rotorua.
“Hi Bobby, just want to say a special thank you for all the beautiful quilts you have been sending us. So many of our client’s and their families have benefited from your kindness and amazing work. They just sooooooo loveeeee their quilts.
This is just one of the many that we have given the quilts to she was wrapped and so thankful. She has 4 children including baby in the photo and she is a solo parent. She took a quilt for each of her other children too J

“Good evening Bobby,
As team leader for Family Works Rotorua I would like to send you a huge “thank you” on behalf of the Rotorua familes who have received the beautiful quilts so far. The staff have been given them out to families who we work with, who are either receiving family counselling, social work or are attending one of our group programmes (i.e. parenting courses or domestic violence prevention). Last week I gave blankets and a hot water bottle to a grandmother who has just started to have day to day care for her 2 grandchildren; they are in financial strive and have been through a lot. These beautiful blankets will surely help to bring some colour back into their lives: the little girl choose one with animals, and the teenage boy loved one with turquoise and white stripes.
Thank you and your team so much,
Warmest wishes from the Family Works Rotorua Team and their clients,”
